At this point the team had been asked to start researching more in depth about various different topics within our NGO development. We all were tasked with just learning more about Oganiland, the Ogani people, and the oil spill. Our main points of research, however, were:
Oil Spill: (Hannah, Galen, Nathan)
- Degree of Damage from Oil Spill (initial and current situations)
- Initial efforts from clean up (Gov't, locals, Shell)
- Remediation techniques
- Related Occurrences/events (don't need to be really in depth but have a brief overview)
Culture of the Ogani people: (Erin, Kim, Kristine, Maria)
- Languages
- tensions within the people
- Government involvement
- General history and traditions
- Society + Hierarchy
Education: (Hung, Meghan)
- Techniques
- current efforts (and past)
- Comparative studies
Business (Jack, Kristine)
- Costs
- Other NGOS?
- NGO's teaming up with the government. Programs should be a 50 year strategy. 2/3 of disease caused by lack of sanitation in Nigeria. Local areas are ignored.
- Background info on water. Has statistcs: over 200,000 death have occured. How they use water to produce their food
- Relationship with the government.
- Oil Spill will take about 20-30 years to clean up.
- U.N. Environment program hasn't really done anything. People steal oil, about 3.65 billion dollars. Shell is where they are stealing the oil from.
- Deals with prevention. Telling people to test water before using. Widespread prevention.
- Cleanup possibility, study done in Port Harcourt and it works
- Natural Gas is hurting the environment also
- Sanitation statistics in Nigeria
- Movement on the survival of the Ogani people, possibly if we can contact them.
